I believe the lyrics as done by Salamander Crossing are not, "I can teach you to fly," but "I can't teach you to fly." This makes better sense in the context.

I can't teach you to fly
Darling one, darling one
I can't teach you to fly darling one
But if you cut away the strings
And realize you have wings
Will you fly back to me darling one?
