Not that it's reasonably priced, but The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo is famous for its unusual rooms. Check out the website at least: http://www.madonnainn.com/index.php. Be sure ancd click on the rooms for pictures. In general, the San Luis Obispo/Morro Bay/Oceano part of the central coast will probably be better for your budget than the more upscale Carmel/Monterey and Santa Barbara areas.

Mind you, I haven't stayed in hotels on the west coast for many years...I camp, or drive home. So my info may be way out of date.
