Thread Name: Lyr Req: I Like Molasses (and other molasses songs
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Like Molasses
I just logged on today (7-24-10) to see if there was any info on this song, which a boy named David Sadler sang a couple times to our 7th grade class in 1958 in Detroit, Mich. David moved at the end of the term, I've never heard the song since, but obviously liked it. These are the words I remember:

Most everybody likes some food the best
One thing that they're fonder of than all the rest
Mine's plain molasses, I think it's the stuff
I eat in night and morning and I never get enough
Cuz I like molasses, good ol' country sorghum
And I sops 'em in the summer and the fall
Get it hot, get it spread, on a big hunk of shortnin' bread
That's the way I like 'em best of all.

I went to see my sweetie, just the other day
She had supper ready and put at me to stay
Didn't have no taters, didn't have no meat
A jug of black molasses was all she had to eat
Cuz she likes molasses, good ol' country sorghum
And she sops 'em in the summer and the fall
When it trickles down her chin, she just licks 'em in again
That's the way she likes 'em best of all.

My mammy and my pappy like molasses too
Pap says it's the only thing that sticks to you
Pappy's eyes are failing, he can hardly see
(this line I forgot -- I made up my own line so I could sing it)
Cuz he likes molasses, good ol' country sorghum
And he sops 'em in the summer and the fall
When they get so full of flies, they resemble raisin pies
That's the way he likes 'em best of all.
