Thread Name: Bridge : Whitby Garland (Anthem)
Subject: Bridge : Whitby Garland (Anthem)
My life has lead me away from the folk scene. I made some good friends and have some great memories.
I saw the thread about the bridge and I thought I would share this song.........it must be 4 or 5 years sinse I sang it.

       The Whitby Garland

At the dawn of the day you rise and your singing,
You see through your window the sun shining through,
The road bridge swings wide and the harbour is busy,
The locals are calling and the boat sails on through.
Soon the town is alive with music and dancing
Fun, laughter and merriment rings in the air,
For Whitby is heaving, the pubs are all crouded,
There's song's and frivolity everywhere.
In the summertime strip the willow,
Doh se doh and make you mine
        From the garland gather heather
From the moorland take your time.
Well not for a day, for two, but for seven,
The drinking and dancing goes on into the night,
There's many hearts glowing and some that are broken
But joy, love and friendship are kindled alight.
The jugglers and jesters perform by the bandstand
There's cloggers and garlanders bells on parade,
There's handkerchiefs flying, children with candyfloss
Street sellers,fishmongers, buckets and spades.

Take a stroll through back allies, look in at the windows
See sepia faces of times now gone by
Look up at the abby set high on the horizon
A tapestry town on clear moonlit night.
Counting the steps after one few too many
You rest by the whale bones and imagine the sea
With Cook setting sail out over the ocean.
Theres many a memory of a sailor must be.
In the summertime strip the willow,
Doh se doh and make you mine
        From the garland gather heather
From the moorland take your time.
At the dawn of the day you rise and your singing,
You see through your window the sun shining through,
The road bridge swings wide and the harbour is busy,
The locals are calling and the boat sail on through.
At the end of the day when your friends are all leaving
Festivities over fond farewells are done.
The last tunes in your head going over and over
Sing it again and a again and again....

Oh the summer time is coming
And the leaves are sweetly bloomin'
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin' heather
Will you go lassie go.
And we'll all go together to pick wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will you go lassie go.

..........:-)
