There was no coverup. Day to day military intelligence, reports and tactics are kept secret of operational reasons.
An extreme but telling example, early 1990's when some jerk in Congress bragged that the NSA was tapping Bin Ladin's Satellite phone. Of course Bin Laden got rid of the phone. Then got down to business organizing the 9/11 attacks.
