Whoa! I just read the lyrics of DAD GAVE MY DOG AWAY, which was recorded by T. Texas Tyler, and which Gene posted above, back in 2007.

The same thing happened to me. There were a few differences, though. He didn't give me a bike, but he did give me $20. I suppose I could have bought a good bike for $20 or less in those days, and I definitely wanted a bike, but I didn't want that $20. I accepted it, because I had no choice, really—the dog would have been given away whether I accepted the money or not. I can't remember what, if anything, I eventually spent it on. It probably sat in my drawer for months.

I never heard of the record until now. I just looked it up—Billboard says it came out in 1959. That's about the same time, give or take a year or two, that I lost my dog.

If I had known the record existed, I probably would have bought that—and played it over and over until Dad gave the record player away, too. Well, that's what I wish I had done, looking back on it now.
