It's probably the equivalent of playing a banjo with a capo at the second fret, meaning you'd be playing an open A rather than an open G. If you wanted to play an open G you would have to tune the strings down or play different chords to achieve a G sound at the A position. That's not impossible if you tune up the 2nd string half a step and use an F-chord configuration for G. I do that all the time anyway.
