Faff - common usage in Yorkshire (not sure about other parts of UK) - needless over-involved messing about when trying to get done what should be a simple job.
Example of usage :-
"He's been faffing about all afternoon with that car engine. If he'd asked me I could have had it fixed in minutes..."
