This may be a bit advanced for you, but...

If you try to open a .midi in NC, it won't, because it expects only .mid files, ok.

But Windows allows you to define BOTH .mid & .midi extensions as midi files and use a default program (you can assign NC) to open them if you just click on the file name - not being up to speed on WIN internals anymore, someone else will have to spell out how to, sorry.
