Claire, looking at pictures, it is the kabocha squash, which seems to have been created from a butternut squash. New word for me!
In the stores here (western Canada) it is just labeled butternut, if it is labeled at all.

The pulp also is a good vegetable, if mixed with a little demerara sugar and touch of cinnamon, served hot.
