In high school and college I learned that if we are concentrating hard on what letters should look like, we can make the most foolish misspellings. That may have happened here, where the crew was concentrating on the equipment.

On the other hand, if it was August in North Carolina, it was probably incredibly hot on the black asphalt, and that does not lead to clear thinking. And the crew might not even speak English.
