Ah but you must remember that folk is an evolving continuum always changing, no such thing as pure or original.

You are speaking not of folk but of what is known now as "old folk"

It is struggling for air time and gets some from time to time but generally it does get in from time to time.

There is fierce competition from non english folk or folk like music (except german)

So just expand your definition a bit and it works.
