The great UK egg crisis was in 1988, and caused the downfall of health minister Edwina Currie. She was just about the only Tory to resign, despite years of financial, commercial and sexual scandals; and she was right. The shock did however start the cleaning up process, and Grandmothers can once more suck in safety. The glamorous Edwina was later famous for her not inconsiderably interesting affair with Prime Minister of the time, John Major.
