Well, yeah, Greg - but most of the updates have to do with fixing vulnerabilities before some outside program attacks your operating system. So, is it really safe to refuse updates?

Mike, it appears that you and I had the same problem at about the same time. Like you, I had to force a shutdown - but unlike your situation, my computer restarted on its own and finished configuring the updates, and now seems to be working normally.
