I'm sure it's always happened, but originally the record industry tried to stop it - look at all the names Blind Willie McTell recorded under - then they realised that they couldn't stop it so they might as well take advantage of it. I'm sure I've got very few early jazz compilations without Eddie Lang popping up somewhere.
