It has often been said of the English that they had a hand in stripping others of their traditions-but it must be remembered that the ordinary man on the street had very little to do with that, and in fact may be considered the first victim of what was an establishment practise by those much further up the food chain. The current licensing laws are only the latest in a long line of disgraceful things those in power have done to our traditions, because they are thought of as irrelevant.
