Ha! I thought I'd managed to avoid all the Olympics nonsense. I didn't watch the opening on the tv. Then this morning I gave a colleague a lift to work and he proceeded to give me a blow by blow description of the whole event.

By the sound of it, it sounded pretty good. The only real embarassment was the giant screen that dropped out of the sky, painted by Ken Done and reading "G'DAY!"

Although I'm not the remotest bit interested in the games, it's great to have such a party atmosphere in Sydney - free concerts, cafes open after midnight, people in the streets. And the roads are completely free of cars because everyone is afraid of being caught in traffic.

And hurrah for Cathy Freeman!
