John I. White is chiefly known for his writings on cowboy songs. White's book, GIT ALONG, LITTLE DOGIES: SONGS AND SONGMAKERS OF THE AMERICAN WEST (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1975) is pretty much an essential work on the subject. Includes wonderful bios of some of the leading figures in early cowboy music -- Gail Gardner, Carl Sprague and others.
White was also a singer in his own right. Sometimes known as the "Lonesome Cowboy," he was frequently heard on the radio, out of New York, during the late twenties, thirties and early forties. He also made twenty recordings on 78.
My personal copy of GIT ALONG LITTLE DOGIES came with a floppy 33-1/3 rpm sampler with "Whoopee-Ti-Yi-Yo" on one side and "Great Grand Dad" on the other. Don't suppose you'll find that in more recent copies.
