Subject: RE: BS: Sauerkraut explosion
When I worked at a Libby, McNeill & Libby canning factory in the summers between academic years when I was at the University of Minnesota, the company's warehouse attached to the factory had a program for those employees who might be interested.

During manufacture and subsequent handling in the warehouse, cans were sometimes unavoidably damaged by accident, to various extents. Those judged to have minimal damage were separated from the stream of commercially saleable product, and once a year you could buy "dents" by the case at a special deeply discounted price. They were sold as "dent brights"; "dent" is clear enough in this context, and "bright" means without labels. I think they were previous-season products, to give time for any potential bulging from internal pressure to develop and any such cans to be disposed of. These bright sale dents were not "swells", at least to external inspection perhaps ten months to a year after canning. I remember that I did buy a case of dent peas or corn (I forget which). No harm came of it, to me or my family, nor to any other employees, to my knowledge.

This was about sixty years ago now. I have no idea whether they still have that program. I rather expect that they do.
