I think two things combined to kill Eddie Fisher's music career. The 'advent' of rock and roll in the mid-'50s (with Chuck Berry, Bill Haley & The Comets, etc.) stole a lot of the 'thunder' of most crooners - though a few, such as Pat Boone, Dean Martin, and Andy Williams 'survived' into the early 1960s. But when Eddie dumped 'America's sweetheart' Debbie Reynolds for Liz Taylor, he really fell out of favor with the public. I think without that "scandal" Eddie's music could have remained popular for perhaps another decade.
