I remember as a kid, hearing the Longfellow poem read aloud, and thinking the line was "the village smith he stands."

Later, when I saw the poem in print, I was surprised to read "smithy," but I still didn't understand that a smithy was a place. I figured it was a nickname, like Jimmy is a nickname for Jim or James.

I can't remember how I finally learned the truth.
