Seems reflex due to the speed of execution, but the thought prior to the (granted, reflex) kick is there, thinking, judging and in the case of high profile footballers, in the knowledge of playing in front of sometimes millions of people at the time and millions more reading the critical analysis on the back page and the pics of your wife on page 3.
