Animals which have eyes on the side of their head aren't usually hunters. If they see another animal which is showing TWO eyes, safety dictates that it is usually a predator, so they scarper. Even more quickly if the predator 'hunches' whilst looking at them.

I've wondered Ed's question myself. Perhaps a rudimentary type of binocular vision that their brain sorts out?
