Thread Name: Lyr Req: Rose -- Campfire round
Subject: Rose -- Campfire round
I was wondering about the song "Rose," which I've sung at Girl Scout camps for as far back as I can remember. I love finding all the different versions of camp song lyrics that I can, and I'm especially curious about this song. The extent of what I know is as follows:

Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose
Shall I ever see thee wed? (or red)
I will marry at thy will sire,
At thy will.

Ding, dong, ding, dong,
Wedding bells on an April morn
Carve your name in a moss-covered stone
In a moss-covered stone

(This one I'm not sure about, nor do I like it very much in keeping with the rest of the song -- I think a whole set of new verses was made for the song at one time, about various bible virtues; this is the only one I know)

Love, love, love, love
The bible (or gospel) teaches us to love
Love thy neighbor as thyself
Love, love, love.

HOWEVER, one time I heard somebody sing it differently, where the first verse was the same as the one above, but after that it changed. It went on to tell some story about a girl forced to marry, and maybe dying . . . I'm not sure. It was rather more dark and medieval than what I have here.

Has anybody heard this other version that could give me the lyrics? Or if anyone knows yet another set of lyrics to this song, I'd greatly appreciate anything you can offer.

~Anne.
