Sonnet 05/01/01                        DXXIII

Without some word from my muse verses die,
Leaving but shells, and scattered lines that hold
Faint chance in desert dreams. How shall I try
To grow hope in mind, when silence has told
The fate of my endeavors? Dare I weep
For future, mourn what will not be, and know
I cry in vain, when tears are all that keep
My lines alive? And, can tears even show
How loud this silence is, and how much pain
The absence brings to heart? I will not say
I have earned more than smile, but to remain
Unknowing, without hope of finding way?
I do not ask for her soul, or her heart:
But pray for her words to give to my art.
