Sonnet 06/01/01                        DXXIV

Dear muse, I have no hope to hold your heart,
Yet pray you read my words: Can they not reach
Some part, to keep your friendship, and to start
At least conversation? Will you yet teach
How to control desires, or harness dreams?
I may despair of looking in your eyes,
But will you send your words, and let the beams
Of inspiration help my verse be wise?
I do not know why you fill thoughts, or send
Such music to my soul: I reap harvest
Of poetry, but fear silences rend
My dreams to dust, and heart beyond all rest.
Perhaps this is the cost I pay for verse:
That light of muse is balanced by this curse.
