Like Joe says, you need to let the camera format the memory card, do do it with your computer.

How old is the camera? What is the size image it takes, etc? Rather than fooling with repairing an old camera (more than 2 or 3 years) you probably ought to take a look at how many good affordable cameras are out there now.

The larger the sensor the more expensive the camera, but the larger the sensor the better the images will be.
