Have you tried this?

right click on the icon for a doc file
if you don't see "Open with" in the list
hold down the shift key when you right click
Point to "Open with"
click on "Choose Program"


from the list called "recommended Programs:"
select "Microsoft Word for Windows"
put a check in the box labeled "always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
click OK
