Well, could be he knows more than you (or they, or they tell) know about the situation. Sometimes there is more going on than one knows about.

Odd that a child would resent his/her parent for not doing more than they coild... seems to me that there could be more than meets the eye.... especially about the part, "We know we will get all his money when he dies..." That in itself sounds beyond odd to me.... sounds like an ungrateful bunch of sucks to me but I could be wrong. Only the lad himself nkows.
