When I worked on the 1990 Census, there was a question on the long form that asked if the respondent was female had she ever had a baby. I was working around the universities, talking to a lot of students, some of who took offense at the question, so, if there were men living there, I would ask them if they'd ever had a baby. If there weren't, I would say, "Sorry, but I have to ask this. I really hate asking the guys."
