You are right in that Cameron hasn't sacked him. I thought about this, and from Cameron's perspective, sacking him might be construed as the embarrassment being justified, whereas keeping him can be seen as the same. Sometimes you just can't win.

At least he has an unpaid post, so if he does need to go, at least it won't cost the taxpayer money.
