I would suggest the Irish government did a bit more than their fair share by not having any oversight over the banks, the financial regulator was essentially a non entity, by actually offering tax incentives for developers to further fuel the property bubble.

Even when the writing was on the wall the government not only didn't notice it, they didn't want to notice it. It not very long ago that then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern wondered why those questioning the property boom and the health of the economy didn't commit suicide. Seriously.
