Thread Name: Lyr Req: Heavenly Aeroplane (J. S. McConnell)
Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane
I have this on a New World CD under the title of 'Airplane Ride'. It is sung by Mrs Nell Hampton. It was recorded by Alan Lomax, but the place of recording is noted as 'unknown'. Lomax noted that it is 'a modern Holiness song from eastern Kentucky and of local composition'. He went on to comment: 'One of the thousands of new spirituals created in the new small churches of the Holiness movement, this song has the touch of true folklore in the vivid metaphors of the verse and the gawky charm of the melody'. No doubt, it will be reissued, if it has not been already, in the massive Rounder Lomax collection.

The New World CD details are: Various Artists 'The Gospel Ship: Baptist Hymns & White Spirituals from the Southern Mountains' New World 80294-2. It also includes a marvellous version of 'My Lord Keeps a Record' by the Mountain Ramblers from Galax, with Cullen Galyean on banjo. Hopefully, the marvellous recordings of this group by Lomax that were issued in the Southern Folk Heritage Series on Atlantic will see the light of day in the Rounder Lomax Collection in due course.
