Ever hear of slapstick, LH? Neilsen's comedy films were a form of verbal, and sometimes physical slapstick.
Some of the greatest comedians of all time did slapstick. Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers, et al. Recently, with a few exceptions such as the Nielsen comedies, we seem to have forgotten how. Too "sophisticated," I guess.
