I heard a programme on the radio about his a few months ago. It would appear that it wasn't uncommon, up until the mid-nineteenth century. to 'sell" a wife at a market. The point was also made that the women were often very glad to get away from the man in question! So it seems that Thomas Hardy didn't dream up this idea.
There must have been some songs about this and I bet someone will come up with one.
The only thing that I can offer is a verse from the old Scottish song, Johnny Lad:
