What's currently there was taken from a Willie Nelson recording and varies a great deal from what was originally written.

I first heard this song in the early '60s, recorded by the Limeliters (with Ernie Sheldon/Lieberman replacing Glenn Yarbrough). Their version was very close to what Scott Wiseman wrote, though I think they put an extra chorus at the beginning before the first verse and they sang "brighter" instead of "fairer" in the final verse.

No matter - it's a great song and is still one of my favorites.
