Thread Name: The Gospel of Pseudo Matthew
Subject: RE: The Gospel of Pseudo Matthew
Well, Bill, I looked it up at Random House. Of course, you're right - but I'm not likely to remember the rule. Luckily, I will only look stupid if I put it in writing. A pedant would have to have a very sharp ear to be able to catch it when it's spoken.

I'm going to break the Pseudo-Matthew text up to make it easier to identify the various stories in the text. This text seems embellished. It does not have the simplicity and directness of the earlier texts. Still, it's very interesting.

The birth of Mary, daughter of Joachim and Anna

Note that Joachim and Anna are not mentioned in the New Testament, but they are recognized by the Catholic Church as parents of the Virgin Mary. I don't know where the names of Joachim and Anna first appear. Wikipedia dates this pseudo-gospel at sometime around 600 AD. In his Lives of the Saints Notre Dame theology professor Richard McBrien says the belief that Joachim and Anna were parents of the Virgin Mary stems from the Gospel of James (also known as the Protoevangelium of James) which dates to the second century. The four canonical gospels date to the late first century.

I agree with josepp - the Protoevangelium of James tells far more interesting stories. There are also some interesting stories in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas.
