There was a band in Cleveland, OH called Eli Radish that was clearly influenced by Captain Beefhart. He was singular and difficult to follow, musically. He was, obviously indifferent to mainstream success on anyone's terms, but his own. That's power. I recall my older brother talking about seeing him and that his guitarist wore a bathrobe onstage. Being pre-pubescent I had trouble wrapping my mind around that. Now, it makes me laugh out loud when I think of it. RIP, Mr. Van Vliet
