When I moved to near eastwood in Notts about forty five years ago now. I was amazed to find that the local working class people had a real hatred, resentment etc of the memory of their most famous son DH lawrence.

I think it was no time to be perceived as different in any way. Little villages seemed to be so very insular back in those days.
