The poor old thing was probably searching around in desperation for something...anything so she could fulfill her social responsibility as she saw it...because the mere thought of NOT doing so was simply TERRIFYING!....not to mention HUMILIATING....(old ladies suffer from those kind of fears...after all, they might DISAPPOINT someone!!!!!)....and in her desperation, she found those peculiar items, packaged them up, and sent them off in the mail, quaking with fear that they might not arrive ON TIME! And even if they did, they might DISAPPOINT the recipient!

It's part of the pathetic cultural madness known as "Christmas", and it afflicts old ladies in ways that are positively pathological. ;-)
