BTW, you could also install these: roof-de-icing-cables
My parents-in-law installed those quite a few years back.
Luckily, when it hit the fan, the firemen (are you still allowed to call them that?) got there very quickly, and the insurance company covered what damage had already occurred, so everything ended well.
