your "When they are wet, smelly or whinging you just hand them back" sounds a like Sandra's Rule for Babies, invented around 30 years ago when my friends started having babies -
Hold it so it's head is supported, & if it makes a noise or does anything in it's nappy (diaper) hand it back to a parent!
