I think just about all of the books on Scott over the last century mention the patronage of Buccleuch and how Buccleuch's ancestors always are seen in the best light in his published versions. And of course Scott himself actually eventually regretted the editorial amendments he made. Peter Buchan had similar patronage from the local Laird in Aberdeenshire (His title escapes me at the moment) and somehow Peter's versions often are relocated to places in Aberdeenshire.
