Well this story was carried on CBC National News and included an interview with the couple. I found what they said convincing enough to believe them. If the CBC editorial board didn't find a basis for some belief the story would not have been carried. The incident is being discussed at the ambassador level between the two countries. The Mexican police are investigating themselves, the security camera in the jail somehow became damaged and someone is posting messages on the man's stolen blackberry with information that would have been known only to someone who was there. Of course there will never be a conviction of the police or even charges laid. Even in Canada police forces band together to protect their own. If there is enough corruption in the RCMP for them to lie to protect members of the force in the face of video evidence, how in Hell can we expect truth to surface from an investigation there!
