Can we really call MacArthur Park sappy, though? Its strangeness transcends the sappy category and sends it right into monumentally silly. Where else could you find a song that not only has Richard Harris putting his heart and soul into lyrics like "someone left the cake out in the rain", accompanied by the marshalled forces of the London Symphony Orchestra, spliced into a mid-song psychedelic-pop instrumental romp, and ending with two or three false codas that finally result in Richard being acoustically morphed into Minnie Ripperton on an end note that only German Shepherds can hear?
