Hmm.   "these talented people".    There is a winnowing process at the start--an amazing number think they have talent--thousands in a given city.   For some there's no evidence the viewer can see or hear.   Which itself can be much more entertaining than the popularity contest it turns into later.   Especially if the contestants argue with the judges.

Along the lines of "who are you to keep my talent from the world?".
