I knew of one alcoholic who replaced one addiction with another,he took up smoking cannabis.
The result was worth observing, he became much less aggressive,His liver and kidneys suffered less abuse although the abuse to his lungs increased, However he became an easier person to interact with.
The problem for some alcoholics might be learning to cope with an addictive personality.
