I`ve met both wolf and coyote in person. Wolves tend to go away and coyotes do the same. I expect maybe the coyotes weren`t hungry enough. However, when I`m unarmed I tend to stay near enough to trees that escape is likely for me. As PDQ said, humans are fast encroaching their territories, and they have no choice but to encroach ours.
