In case my "ping" idea didn't reveal a substantial delay, Jon's clue for JavaScript seems plausible to me; cf. another thread on JavaScript scripts powering ads. Try switching off JavaScript to test the hypothesis. Since JavaScript is in the responsibility of browsers, switching them may solve the problem. Sometimes it is a trade between speed and security.
