Sugarfoot ~ I have always thought Beckham a grossly overrated player, & so do two of my cousins with whom the subject came up at a recent family occasion. I put the point that he could take an incomparable free kick, with which they agreed. Otherwise we concurred that his playing was just average-ish, if that; & that it was his undoubted physical beauty {my late wife used to gasp every time she happened to pass by while he was on the screen ~ ditto, for what it's worth & sorry for the drift, Jose Mourinho} + the social clout of his having married an equally beautiful & {at the time) distinguished wife, that accounted for his perceived pre-eminence.
